Karl Bang

Karl Bang Art Work

Karl Bang was born in Shanghai in 1935 and was exposed to art from birth. His father was a famous commercial artist and a close neighbor and friend was a renowned fine art painter trained in the European tradition in France and Belgium. Karl Bang began his training at an early age and drew upon these diverse influences of both Western and traditional Chinese styles. Bang continued his formal art training until graduating from the Harding Institute in 1956. Karl Bang then began his professional life painting for the China National Publishing House. This was a prolific time for Bang, publishing 220 paintings with a total distribution of 10 million prints. Bang enjoyed greater than average freedom as an artist in China but still felt restricted by the state so in 1984 he and his family immigrated to the U.S. on a "quest for freedom of expression." That artistic freedom has led to Karl Bang's current style of painting, integrating Western and Traditional Chinese painting styles in multicultural themes reflecting the melting pot Bang experienced in the U.S.

"Painting women is in keeping with traditional Chinese art. Women depict peace of mind and natural beauty. I try to make them different because I'm thinking of the inner soul of the person I draw, what they're thinking and not merely how they look." - Karl Bang

For years Karl Bang was one of China's most famous artists. Now, he is fast becoming one of America's most famous artists and has become known for his sensuous paintings of women.
